Call for nominations for the Fram Centre research- and outreach prizes for 2019

We would like to invite members of the Fram Center to send in nominations for the 2019 Fram Centre research- and outreach prizes

The nominations and the relevant documentation (see criteria in the full article) should be sent by e-mail before 15:00 on 20 November 2019 to Kathryn Donnelly  kd@framsenteret.no and Eldbjørg S Heimstad  esh@nilu.no

The winners of the Fram Centre research- and outreach prizes for 2019 will be announced  in December 2019.

Who can receive a Fram Centre prize?

All researchers and communicators of research who work at the Fram Centre and its member institutions, as well as other national and international co-workers. The research field/outreach field must relate to the scientific programmes of the Fram Centre flagships.

The nomination

All employees and students at the Fram Centre and its member institutions, as well as national and international co-workers can nominate candidates for the Fram Centre prizes. A candidate can be nominated to both prizes the same year, but not the following year. A prize can be given to several candidates.

Criteria for the nomination

Nominations must be well founded and the committee should not need to acquire substantial additional information to evaluate the candidates. Criteria for the nomination:

  1. Who is nominated
  2. Who is nominating
  3. Abstract of the foundation for the nomination (max. ½ A4 page)
  4. Documentation

The documentation must support the nomination, max. 10 pages. It can also contain copies/examples of publications, reports, publication lists, newspaper articles, statements from co-workers, users and institutions, references etc. Also, the committee can evaluate sound/video files, but only upon guided access to these.

The committee will assess reuse of good nominations to e.g. the Norwegian Research Council prizes.

Criteria for the Fram Centre prizes

The receiver(s) of a Fram Centre prize has in a profound way added knowledge and contributed to the research and outreach in the Fram Centre, strengthened these and contributed to reach the goals of the Fram Centre.

For the Fram Centre prizes the criteria are as follows:

Research prize:

  • The research must be related to the scientific programmes of the flagship(s)
  • Quality and production of national and international publications and reports
  • Degree of international cooperation
  • Ability and will to conduct interdisciplinary research
  • Ability and will to seek external funding
  • Degree of cooperation scills
  • The Fram Centre wishes to honor young excellent researchers and will e.g. prioritize scientific productivity before total scientific production in the assessment of candidates

Outreach prize:

  • Outreach activity
  • Ability to communicate research in a way that makes it understandable
  • Outreach in different fora (for education, information, management, politics and media)
  • Ability and will to creativity and use of new communication platforms
  • Research communication during a research project
  • Response from the audience
  • Reach new audiences

Utlysning av prosjektmidler fra Framsenterets flaggskip Polhavet for 2020/Flagship call for Arctic Ocean 2020

Det inviteres med dette til å søke om prosjektmidler fra Framsenterets flaggskip Polhavet for 2020.
Alle prosjektforslag skal bygge på flaggskipets vitenskapelige program, "Scientific programme 2016-2020 for the Flagship «Sea Ice in the Arctic Ocean, Technology and Governance»", se "Scientific program". Søknaden sendes inn elektronisk ved å gå inn på "Flagships and Funding" og "Proposal submission for funding in 2020". Søknader om nye prosjekter må ta utgangspunkt i kravene i dette programmet. På flere av de faglige temaene i Polhavet er det pågående, flerårige prosjekter som ønskes videreført med henvisning til de respektive prosjektplanene.

Call for proposals Flagship “Hazardous substances” for 2020

This is an invitation to submit proposals to the flagship «Hazardous substances- effects on ecosystem and health» for the budget year 2020. The scientific basis are given by the updated program plan “Scientific program 2016 – 2020“ (original program was evaluated externally in 2012).

Floating Nuclear Power Plants in the Arctic 10.10.19 19:00 UiT

Challenges associated with the use of Floating Nuclear Power Plants in the Arctic

On the 10th of October, 19:00, we will host at the Faculty of Law – specifically at the champagnekantina – a public outreach seminar on use of floating nuclear power plants in the Arctic.

This time the title of the event is ‘Challenges associated with the use of Floating Nuclear Power Plants in the Arctic’.

This session will include presentations from Section Director Mette Nilsen and Senior Adviser Øyvind Aas-Hansen of the Norwegian Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, Senior Legal Adviser Lill Veronika Benjaminsen from the Norwegian Coastal Administration, and Associate Professor Maria Madalena das Neves from NCLOS. These presentations will provide an explanation of floating nuclear power plants and their characteristics; the challenges and risks they pose in the context of their operation in the Arctic and of navigation through Norwegian waters; as well as an explanation of the adequacy of applicable legal framework.


These presentations are undertaken in the context of the project Arctic FNPPs funded by the FRAM Centre.
