Flagship

Ocean acidification, Theme: Effect of ocean acidification on species and ecosystems

Summary of Results
Experiment started September 25th 2011. Seven individuals of the white morphotype of
the cold water coral Lophelia pertusa were exposed to three different levels of pH (8.1,
7.9 and 7.6) The experiment ran until January 25th 2012 (5 months), just before natural
spawning was due to start. The corals were fixed, decalcified, embedded in paraffin and
finally sectioned into thin slices that currently are waiting for staining and mounting.
The sections will be analyzed for differences in fecundity, size of eggs, and tissue
differences during the first half of May. The skeleton has been sent to colleagues in the
USA to be investigated for skeletal density. The final results are expected in June 2012.
